Business insurance basics for SMEs in Ghana

Understand common business insurance terms in Ghana, insurer licence checks, exclusions and the difference between public information and an actual policy.

An insurer, intermediary and policy are different things

An insurer underwrites insurance; an intermediary may arrange or distribute it within its permitted role. National Insurance Commission Ghana (NIC) publishes registers for regulated entities. Afiwe's insurer directory identifies the listed insurer and links to its public regulator record where available.

Common descriptions on business insurance pages

Provider websites may describe property, motor, goods-in-transit, liability, employee-related or other business covers. These are examples of product descriptions, not a statement that every business needs every cover or that every insurer offers them. The actual cover is defined in policy documents.

Reading a quotation and policy

The premium is the price of cover; it is not the same as a coverage limit. Documents may also describe an excess or deductible, exclusions, conditions, territorial scope, policy period and claims process. Their wording and applicability vary by policy.

A public product page is not an individual quotation or proof of cover. The insurer can explain what a particular quotation includes and provide the applicable documents. Afiwe does not calculate premiums, issue policies or handle claims.

Using dated public information

Afiwe lists real providers using regulator and official provider sources, with review dates. It does not rank insurers or recommend a product for a business. Unknown premiums and conditions are not estimated.

In the Ghana Insurers directory, readers can open a provider's profile and official website. Current licence status, eligibility, terms and any applicable legal requirements remain matters to confirm with the relevant official source.
