Microfinance banks in Ghana: what to know

Understand Ghana's microfinance terminology, the difference between lending and deposit-taking permissions, and how to read Bank of Ghana records.

By Afiwe · Reviewed 21 Oct 2026. This is general factual information, not advice or a recommendation.

The name does not establish the licence

People sometimes use 'microfinance bank' as a general description. Bank of Ghana (BoG) registers distinguish institution types, including savings and loans companies, microfinance institutions and microcredit businesses. These descriptions are not interchangeable permissions. Afiwe displays the institution type recorded for each listed provider.

Deposit-taking and lending are different activities

A business offering credit should not be assumed to have permission to accept savings from the public. The regulator's record and the provider's current licence scope are the relevant references. The existence of a website, an app or an agent alone does not establish authorisation.

Understanding a product page

A published loan page may describe the intended customer, application channel and repayment arrangement. A savings page may describe access conditions and charges. These details vary by provider and product. Afiwe does not infer unpublished rates or treat one institution's conditions as applying to another.

Using the directory

Afiwe groups confirmed Ghanaian savings and loans companies, microfinance institutions and other licensed non-bank lenders under Lenders, while keeping universal banks under Banks. Some entries have only a profile and official link because specific product terms have not been reproduced.

The last-checked date indicates when public sources were reviewed. Current status and product terms still need confirmation with the regulator and provider.
