What these rates mean

Factual definitions of savings rates, prime and maximum lending rates, APR and the Ghana Reference Rate, with dated regulator sources.

Savings deposit rate

A savings deposit rate describes interest on savings balances. Per annum (p.a.) means per year. A bank-level average published by a regulator is not a quotation for every savings account, customer or balance tier. Product-specific conditions remain on the bank's own website.

Prime and maximum lending rates

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) weekly table publishes prime and maximum lending rates by bank and economic sector. Afiwe reproduces the GENERAL-sector row and labels a prime–maximum range where both endpoints are published. It does not combine the lowest and highest figures from unrelated sectors.

Prime and maximum are the two published endpoints, not an assurance that a particular applicant will receive a rate within that range. A missing endpoint is left missing. General lending rates are not the same measure as APR, and do not establish fees, eligibility or the price of a named personal or SME loan.

Time-deposit rate

A time deposit is money held for an agreed period under the bank's terms. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) table used by Afiwe publishes one average time-deposit rate per bank. It does not identify a tenor for that average, so Afiwe does not assign a term or promise that rate for a particular fixed-deposit product.

Annual percentage rate (APR)

Bank of Ghana (BoG) APR publications distinguish households, SMEs and corporates, and may distinguish loan tenors. APR is an annualized measure intended to reflect borrowing costs, including the interest and applicable charges in the publication's methodology. Customer groups and tenors must remain separate.

An APR is not a savings yield or simply a bank's prime rate. Afiwe displays a Ghana APR only when its exact bank, customer group, tenor and publication period have been verified in an official Bank of Ghana (BoG) file. If the official file cannot be verified, the figure stays missing.

Ghana Reference Rate

The Ghana Reference Rate is an industry benchmark banks use in pricing loans. It is not the final rate for every borrower: bank-specific risk premia and charges may also apply. Afiwe shows a benchmark value only after confirming the figure and effective date with the Bank of Ghana (BoG) or Ghana Association of Banks; it does not infer a value from news reports.

Publication dates and sources

The as-at date is the date covered by a publication, not a promise that the bank still charges or pays that rate. Rates are published by the regulator for the date shown. Banks may have changed them since — confirm with the bank.

Figures are reproduced as published, including unusual values. Missing figures are not zero, and they are not estimated from the monetary policy rate. Each displayed regulator figure links to its publication and identifies its publisher. Afiwe gives information and direct links only, without recommendations, advice or financial product sales.
